Sustainability and the environment

COVID-19 has dramatically changed the way we live our lives, but that doesn't mean we should give up on the things that mattered before the virus came along, including the environment.

The importance of wearing face masks is being scientifically shown to help reduce the spread of the virus. And whilst disposable masks are useful for front line health workers, by switching to washable, reusable masks in our day-to-day lives we can all help reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.

Did you know?

According to an analysis by scientists at University College London, if every person in the UK used one single-use mask each day for a year, an extra 66,000 tonnes of contaminated plastic waste would be created. Now multiply that by everyone in the world. Your single decision can have a huge impact.

Be kind to the environment and be smart in the choices we make

We follow the "waste hierarchy" principles in choosing our products

The waste hierarchy triangleNot everything in the world can be recycled, composted or broken down naturally. So we have to be smart about the things we use and how we use them.

By following the layers of this triangle, it helps us to think seriously about the items we're using on a daily basis and helps minimise the amount of waste we're sending to landfill.

Can you apply this thinking to your daily life?

How do we choose our masks?

We make sure every mask sold to you is more than just a reusable item. That's a given. Every mask we sell needs to go above and beyond, primarily in fabric choice or construction.

This means we're always on the look out for innovative materials, such as chitosan, or recycled materials.

Why don't you sell masks with changeable filters?

For us, the mere addition of a changeable filter is just another single use item to contribute to an already growing landfill waste problem. If a mask is properly made and uses the proper materials then simply washing it after each use is enough. For workers on the front line, an N95 mask with changeable filters and air filtration systems are recommended according to government guidelines, but for you and me doing our daily shop, a triple layered, properly constructed mask is sufficient
